Soda’s Bubbling up All over Philly

Boasting its early origins in Philadelphia (with many thanks to a few hardworking doctors and pharmacists) soda as we know it was born in around 1809. Today carbonated drinks are undergoing a resurgence in the Philly region with local visionaries (i.e. chefs, bartenders and crafters) putting a new spin on proceedings by producing weird and wonderful flavours. Here are some of the most ingenious places bubbling up in Philly…

For local legends…
Dr. Physick Soda Pop – Originally used as a tonic for tummy upsets, this bubbly medicine has been repackaged and now comes in Black Cherry flavour and is made from sugar cane.

For curious creations…
Lucky Old Souls – Expect an eclectic mix at this eco-friendly burger truck, with home-brewed cream, ginger, hibiscus, lime, lovage and sarsaparilla sodas to wash down your patty.

For boozy bubbles…
Garces Trading Company – Mixing up decidedly delicious hand-bottled alcoholic fizz every season, the current three are the Americano (Campari, sweet vermouth and orange), Avenue 1111 (Tanqueray, lime cordial, ginger beer and mint) and Pepino Fresco (Cuervo Gold, St. Germain, celery juice, cucumber juice and lemon).

For draught delights…
The Franklin Fountain – A retro step back in time, sip on soda in every which flavour from teaberry to cherry, chocolate to sassafras. Spice up your beverage with a shot of booze or a smooth scoop of the Fountain’s infamous ice cream.

For farmed fizz…
Russet – Bring your own bottle to get it filled to the brim with homemade seasonal soda in flavours such as pear and ginger.

For the root route…
Yards Brewing Company – Alongside its plethora of award-winning ales, an under-21 year-old option is available by means of refreshing root beer.
