‘Open Air’ Giant Light Installation Opening Date Announced

Open Air Light Show, Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, Events, ArtThe giant 3-D light installation set to illuminate the skies above Benjamin Franklin Parkway will début this September.

Commissioned by the Association for Public Art (aPA) in conjunction with the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and the 2012 Design Philadelphia Festival, the temporary installation, named ‘Open Air’ allows residents and tourists to really become a part of the art.

Using  visitors’ voices and GPS positions (via app) 24 robotic searchlights lining half-a-mile of the Parkway are will activate, forming spectacular light shows in the night sky.

The project will run every night from September 20 to October 14, from 8 – 11 pm, its world première falling on the 2012 Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe; its closing on the final night of the 2012 Design Festival.

An official Open Air HQ complete with seating areas, project information and mobile device loan stations will be at Eakins Oval.

The opening night celebration is a free event, taking place on September 20 from 7.30 – 11 pm, on the inner drive of Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Expect an exciting live countdown, a cornucopia of food trucks, a presentation from the brains behind the spectacular and of course the wondrous show itself.
